Kathrein UFS 903 <-> Technisat TechniStar S1 
One of the characteristics of individual receiver there is already enough to read in other reviews. As both units are traded in various professional journals as a top recommendation, I would like to compare the two devices here (as of: 07.07.2010. both devices with the latest software - seem to be observed, especially when relatively new Technisat to be fixed now where almost all problems)
First things first - PICTURE QUALITY:
HD: Both provide a very good picture. 10/10
SD: Again, both deliver an acceptable image in the upscaling and there certainly are both currently better devices on the market in this price category, which relates to upscaling. However, the Technisat with SD material has the edge because it is less "noise" created and thus creates a more pleasant image. Also "oversubscribed" is not the Technisat the edges as much as it can be when Kathrein some already annoying. [Tested on a Sharp Aquos, all image filters disabled]. Switching the screen size (4:4, 16:9, etc.) dominated the Technisat better. Technisat 7 / 10, Kathrein 6 / 10

Wer noch einen alten AV-Receiver hat, der über keine einstellbare Audioverzögerung verfügt, sollte aktuell jedoch die Finger vom Kathrein lassen: Dieser hat eine fix eingestellte Zeit von 100 ms, der Menüpunkt ist grau unterlegt und nicht auswählbar. (Lt. Kathrein soll gegen Ende Juli eine neue Softwarerevision 1.12 rausgehen, wo die Tonverzögerung dann einstellbar ist). Beim Technisat kann der Kunde die Tonverzögerung in beide Richtungen problemlos einstellen. Klares Plus. Dafür verfügt der Technisat nur über digitlaen an RCA digital output that Kathrein has an additional optical digital output.

Der Kathrein scheint weitaus "aufnahmefreudiger" bei ext. Festplatten zu sein. In diversen Foren wird beim Technisat von einer neuen Hardware-Version gesprochen (Endung x.1), bei der es weniger Probleme geben soll (ev. mehr Ausgangsstrom für USB-Anschluss? Amazon hat mir 05.07.2010 noch eine x.0 ausgeliefert auf dem getestet wurde)
HDCP (Steuerung von Ein- Aus am TV via SAT-Receiver):
Funktioniert beim Kathrein ohne Probleme, der Technisat schafft leider nur das aus- nicht jedoch das einschalten. Bleibt auf Softwareupdate zu hoffen...
OPTIK GERÄT:
Der Kathrein ist eher gross, hat dafür das Netzteil integriert, wirkt aber optisch wie ein 10 Jahre altes Gerät. Design ist dem Kathrein ein Fremdwort. Dafür punktet der Kathrein mit einem digit. Display das auch den Sendernamen anzeigen kann. Der Technisat hat nach wie vor das von Technisat gewohnte numerische kurze Display - hier wäre dringend Nachbesserung angebracht. Dafür ist der Technisat "stylischer" und auch einiges kleiner, da das Netzteil extern anzubringen ist.
GARANTIE:

Perfekt und günstig
Der Receiver bietet alles, was ich brauche: Perfekte HD-Wiedergabe, eine großartige Menüführung, sowohl beim ersten Einschalten als auch im täglichen Gebrauch, einen digitalen Videorecorder (der auch Musik vom Radio aufnimmt) mit allen Schmankerln.
Das Gerät ist für mich ein Susi-Sorglos-Kauf. Anstecken, die Meldungen bei der Installation lesen, und los gehts.
Der Digitalrecorder ist in der Bedienung absolut simpel. Die meisten Funktionen laufen über die Farbtasten (rot/grün/gelb/blau) mit Kontext-sensitiven Menüpunkten. Die Aufnahmefunktion lief bei mir auf 3 verschiedenen USB-HDs (Archos QDisk 3,5", Trekstor 3,5" und Seagate 2,5") und auch auf USB-Sticks mit 1 und 2 GB.
Die Medien müssen FAT16 bzw FAT32 formatiert sein (kein NTFS verwendbar). Ob das ein Manko ist, kann ich nicht sagen, jedenfalls nimmt er brav komplette Abendfilme in HD auf und spielt sie auch brav wieder ab.
Ergänzend kann ich nun sagen, dass die Formatierung FAT32 ist (bzw. sein muss). Aufnahmen werden dann in 1,8 GB große Chunks divided.
